Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: exploit v., -able suffix.
Etymology: < exploit v. + -able suffix. Compare Middle French, French exploitable (of natural resources) that can be harvested or extracted, that can be used to make a profit (1690), that can be taken (often unfair) advantage of (1832; late 14th cent. in Middle French as explectable in sense ‘that can be seized’).In sense 1 apparently after a corresponding use of French exploitable (apparently only recorded by Cotgrave: compare quot. 1611).
