Origin: A borrowing from Italian. Etymon: Italian fagotto.
Etymology: < Italian fagotto (1722; 1565 as phagoto), probably a transferred use of fagotto faggot n. on account of a supposed resemblance in appearance, although the details are unclear. Compare French fagot (17th cent.), German Fagott (17th cent.).
