Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin antemurale.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin antemurale bulwark, fortification (Vulgate) < classical Latin ante- ante- prefix + mūrus wall (see mure n.) + -āle -al suffix1.
Now rare.
An outer fortification, esp. one belonging to a city or castle; a barbican. Also occasionally in extended use.
