Origin: Formed within English, by derivation; originally modelled on a Latin lexical item. Etymons: faction n.1, -ary suffix1.
Etymology: < faction n.1 + -ary suffix1, originally (in quot. 1555 at sense A.) after post-classical Latin factionarius member of a faction of charioteers (5th cent.). Compare Middle French, French factionnaire (c1560 as adjective, 1574 as noun). With use as noun compare factioner n.
