Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from French. Or (ii) a borrowing from Latin. Etymons: French factieux; Latin factiōsus.
Etymology: < (i) Middle French factieux (French factieux ) (of people) mutinous, rebellious (1488; a1468 as noun in sense ‘rebel’), or its etymon (ii) classical Latin factiōsus busy, active, having a powerful following or connections, of or belonging to a faction, turbulent, acting as a faction < factiōn- , factiō faction n.1 + -ōsus -ous suffix. Compare Italian fazioso mutinous, rebellious (14th cent.), belonging to a faction (a1540).
