Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Probably also partly a variant or alteration of another lexical item. Etymons: Latin factivus ; factitive adj.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin factivus creative, productive (frequently from 13th cent. in British sources) < classical Latin fact- , past participial stem of facere to make (see fact n.) + -īvus -ive suffix. Compare Middle French factif (late 14th cent.; 1576 in the passage translated in quot. 1598 at sense 1).In sense 2 probably an error for factitive adj., although compare German faktiv (1843 or earlier in this sense; the more usual word is faktitiv factitive adj.).

Linguistics.
Of a verb: assigning to its object (usually a clause) the status of truth. Of a predicate: that follows a verb of this type.Examples of factive verbs are know, regret, resent. In contrast believe is a non-factive verb and pretend a contrafactive one.The 1968 source referred to in quot. 1969 was an advance version of the paper cited in quot. 1970.
