Etymology: Shortened < síneadh fada n.The following earlier passage apparently cites the Irish adjective fada as if it was a noun, either erroneously or as a (spontaneous) shortening of síneadh fada síneadh fada n. in an English context:1939 Fermanagh Herald 30 Dec. 2 Accentuation is on the syllable of the word that bears a dash above it—what is called in Irish a fada. The usual shortening of the phrase within Irish is síneadh.
An Irish diacritic mark having the form of an acute accent, which is placed over a vowel to indicate that the letter should be pronounced with a long sound; = síneadh fada n.
