Origin: A borrowing from Twi. Etymon: Twi ananse.
Etymology: < Twi ananse spider, also used as the name of the character (especially in agya Ananse , with honorific title). In quot. 1705 via Dutch.The β. forms either show aphesis within English (perhaps suggested by the use of apostrophes in some forms), or the loss of the prefix a- of the Twi etymon (also found in some other borrowings from this language); apparently earliest in nancy story n.
Originally West African and Caribbean.
The name of a mythological male character having the form of a spider and noted for his cunning and trickery, originally occurring in Akan folklore and subsequently in numerous Caribbean folk tales.
