Etymology: < an- prefix2 + ancient Greek ἄνθρωπος human being (see anthropo- comb. form) + -ism suffix, after atheism n. Compare earlier misanthropism n., philanthropism n.Compare ancient Greek ἀνθρωπισμός humanity. N.E.D. (1884) gives the pronunciation as (æ̆næ·nþrŏpiz'm) /æˈnænθrəpɪz(ə)m/.
Obsolete. rare.
A lack of feeling or sympathy for one's fellow human beings.Usually presented as an explicit counterpart to atheism n.
