Etymology: < post-classical Latin anarchicus (1580 or earlier) < ancient Greek ἄναρχος (see anarch n.) + classical Latin -icus -ic suffix; compare ancient Greek ἀρχικός of or for rule. Compare earlier anarchial adj., anarchical adj.Compare French anarchique (1594 in Middle French), Spanish anárquico (1780; 1739 as †anárchico ), Italian anarchico (1771; < French), German anarchisch (1756). In sense 2 after anarchism n. 2.
