Stress is usually determined by a subsequent element and vowels may be reduced accordingly. Some degree of stress is always maintained on the second syllable. Etymology: < anarch- (in anarchy n., anarchism n., anarchist n., anarchist adj., etc.) + -o- connective.Compare French anarcho- (formations in which are attested from the late 19th cent., e.g. anarcho-socialiste (1893 or earlier)), and German anarcho-, Russian anarxo- (formations in both of which are attested from the early 20th cent.).
