Etymology: < post-classical Latin fallentia instance of failure of a rule (1514 or earlier; 14th cent. in sense ‘habit of failing’) < classical Latin fallent- , fallēns , present participle of fallere to deceive (see fail v.) + -ia -y suffix3; compare -ency suffix.With the form fallancy compare -ancy suffix.
