Etymology: < classical Latin anhēlātiōn-, anhēlātiō shortness or breath, panting, gasping, in post-classical Latin also eager pursuit or desire (14th cent. in a British source) < anhēlāt- , past participial stem of anhēlāre anhele v. + -iō -ion suffix1. Compare earlier anhele v.Compare Middle French anhelation (French anhélation) shortness of breath, breathing with difficulty (1562), Catalan anhelació, Spanish anhelación (1613), Portuguese anelação (1836 as †anhelação).
