Origin: Formed within English, by conversion. Etymon: English false card.
Etymology: < false card (in cards) a card played in order to give one's opponents a misleading impression of one's strength in the suit led ( < false adj. + card n.2; compare false adj. 2g).With false-carding n. at Derivatives compare the following earlier example, which shows a different formation ( < false adj. + carding n.2):1589 W. intransitive. To play a false card (false adj. 2g); esp. in Bridge, to play a card other than the normal one, so as to mislead an opponent.
