Etymology: < French famille rose (1862 or earlier in the work of Jacquemart and Le Blant: compare 1868 at sense A.) < famille family (see family n.) + rose rose adj.¹ Compare famille verte n.The Chinese name for this style of porcelain is yángcǎi, literally ‘(with) foreign colours’ (on account of the use of dyes from Europe), and now also fěncǎi, literally ‘(with) powder (enamel) colours’ and ruǎncǎi, literally ‘soft-coloured’.

Famille rose enamels are typically opaque or semi-opaque, in contrast with the translucent enamels of famille verte.
