Etymology: < family n. + court n.1 In sense 1 after French cour de famille (1761 in the passage translated in quot. 1772 at sense 1, the third Family Compact: see Family Compact n. 1b).
1. Any of the various courts of 18th-cent. Europe forming an alliance under a Family Compact (Family Compact n. 1b). Now historical.
