Infestation with liver flukes of the genus Fasciola, which occurs in sheep, cattle, and other mammals (including humans), and may result in acute or chronic disease with inflammation and necrosis of the liver and severe anaemia.Fascioliasis caused by Fasciola hepatica is particularly common in regions with a mild, damp climate in which both the flukes and the snails which act as their intermediate hosts are able to thrive.Also called liver rot, esp. in livestock.
