Etymology: < ancient Greek ἀνήριθμος (also ἀνάριθμος) countless ( < ἀν- an- prefix2 + ἀριθμός number: see arithmetic n.1) + -scope comb. form. N.E.D. (1884) gives the pronunciation as (ænĕri·þmŏskoup) /ænəˈrɪθməskəʊp/.
Obsolete.
An optical device capable of automatically projecting a sequence of images at fixed intervals, (later) so as to create a motion picture. Cf. cinematograph n. 1.
