Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: father n., -ed suffix2; father v., -ed suffix1.
Etymology: Partly < father n. + -ed suffix2, and partly < father v. + -ed suffix1.Compare Old English (rare) gefædred born of the same father ( < y- prefix + father n. + -ed suffix2; compare y- prefix 1b); compare also (rare) gefæderen , in the same sense (see fatheren adj.).
Provided with or having a father, esp. of a specified kind. Also: cared for by, or as if by, a father.‘He childed as I fathered’ in quot. 1608 has been interpreted as meaning ‘his children treated him, as my father has treated me’, and also ‘he was made a child as I was made a father’: see S. Wells (ed.) King Lear (2000) 204.
