Etymology: < post-classical Latin anathematicus cursed, excommunicated (14th cent. in a British source; 16th cent. or earlier in continental sources) < anathemat- , anathema cursed person, curse (see anathema n.1) + -icus -ic suffix. Compare earlier anathematical adj.Compare Middle French anathematique, French anathématique (of a bull or condemnation) pronounced solemnly (1598; rare before the 19th cent.).

Etymology: < (i) post-classical Latin anathematicus of or relating to votive offerings (1560 or earlier), and its etymon (ii) Hellenistic Greek ἀναθηματικός consisting of votive offerings < ancient Greek ἀναθηματ- , ἀνάθημα votive offering (see anathema n.2) + -ικός -ic suffix. Compare earlier anathematic adj.1Compare French anathématique (1838 or earlier), German anathematisch (1830 in the passage translated in quot. 1850, or earlier).
