Etymology: < Middle French anatheme (French anathème ): see anathema n.1In quot. 1826 at sense 1 after Italian anatema anathema n.1 For evidence of variation in the pronunciation of the vowel in the final syllable in α. spellings in early use compare the rhymes in quots. 1606 at sense 2 (on them ) and ?1614 at sense 2 (on dream).
