Etymology: < on prep. + aunter, variant (with syncope) of adventure n. (compare β. forms at that entry), originally after Anglo-Norman and Old French, Middle French en aventure in danger, at risk (12th cent. in Anglo-Norman). With use as adverb compare peradventure adv. With use as conjunction compare enaunter conj., in aunter at adventure n. Phrases 3, and on aunter at adventure n. Phrases 3.With the β. forms compare α. forms at adventure n.
