See also nanberry n.
Origin: Of unknown origin.
Etymology: Origin unknown. Compare angleberry n.With the first syllable perhaps compare Old English ang- in compounds denoting painful medical complaints, e.g. angseta carbuncle, abscess, boil, angnægl agnail n.; compare discussion at ange adv. and n. The γ. forms suggest that the second element was probably associated with berry n.1 (perhaps on account of its shape and texture), although its original sense is unclear. Compare Italian moro , lit. ‘mulberry’, formerly also used to denote a kind of swelling or tumour (see moro n.1 and compare more n.4); the Italian word is cited in quot. 1566 (although the English word appears in a β. form there). Variation between forms of the types -bury and -berry (of various origin) is also attested in other words in the late Middle English and early modern English periods; compare molbury at mulberry n. and adj. β. forms, nasebury at naseberry n. Forms, and bery at bury v. Forms. Alternative suggestion. An irregular derivation < Old English ampre amper n. has also been suggested, although if so the two forms must subsequently have been differentiated in meaning, since some varieties of modern English have both words with distinct meanings.
