Etymology: Old English fæc, corresponding to Old Frisian fek, fak, Old Saxon fac (Middle Low German, Dutch vak), Old High German fah (Middle High German vach, modern German fach); the continental sense is chiefly ‘compartment’, ‘bounded space’. The normal modern English form would be fack.
Obsolete since 12th cent.
A definite interval in space or time; a limited distance, fixed period.
