Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin ferrātus , -in suffix1.
Etymology: < classical Latin ferrātus bound or covered with iron, clad in armour, armoured, (of water) impregnated with iron ( < ferrum iron (see ferro- comb. form) + -ātus -ate suffix2) + -in suffix1. Compare German Ferratin (1894).
Biochemistry. Now historical.
An iron-containing substance obtained from liver tissue, probably a mixture of ferritin and other proteins.

1893 O. Schmiedeberg in Practitioner Dec. 427 It [sc. a compound] contains, on the average, 6 per cent. of iron, and may briefly be referred to as Ferratin.
1912 W. Tibbles Foods v. 127 The protein obtained in this manner has been called ferratin; when hydrolyzed by mineral acids, it yields nuclein bases and a pentose (xylose).
1930 Proc. Soc. Exper. Biol. & Med. 1930–1 28 294 The serum of a rabbit treated with sheep ferratin gave precipitin reactions with beef, hog and sheep ferratins..but not with any of the corresponding sera.
1946 Chem. Rev. 38 381 According to Schmiedeberg..the iron was attached to a protein and this compound, which he called Ferratin, was present in spleen, liver, and marrow... (Today we know that this compound was a mixture of denatured ferritin and denatured proteins.)
2009 R. Crichton Iron Metabolism (ed. 3) vi. 183 The name was adapted from the iron rich protein that Naunyn [and] Schmiedeberg had isolated from pig liver..and had called ‘ferratin’.
