Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin ferreus , -ous suffix.
Etymology: < classical Latin ferreus made of iron, of or characteristic of iron, iron-barred, ironclad, having the nature of iron, hard-hearted, untiring, inexorable, shameless, brazen, in scientific Latin also resembling the colour of polished iron (1832, in the passage translated in quot. 1836 at sense 3, or earlier; < ferrum iron (see ferro- comb. form) + -eus : see -eous suffix) + -ous suffix. Compare earlier ferreal adj. and slightly later ferrean adj.With the specific use in chemistry in sense 1 compare ferrous adj.
