Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element; modelled on a French lexical item. Etymons: Latin ferrum , -ic suffix.
Etymology: < classical Latin ferrum iron (see ferro- comb. form) + -ic suffix, after French ferrique (1789 in acide ferrique , in the passage translated in quot. 1789 at sense 1). Compare scientific Latin ferricus (1799 or earlier). Compare earlier ferrical adj. and later ferrous adj.
1. Chemistry. Forming names of compounds and salts of iron in which the element has a higher oxidation state or valency, esp. +3. Hence: designating this oxidation state, or iron in this state. Contrasted with ferrous adj. 2.Recorded earliest in ferric acid n. at Compounds.
