单词 ferrier
释义

ferriern.

Brit. /ˈfɛrɪə/, U.S. /ˈfɛriər/
Forms:

α. late Middle English feryare, 1500s–1600s 1800s– ferrier, 1600s–1800s ferryer; Scottish pre-1700 feriar, pre-1700 ferrear, pre-1700 ferreiar, pre-1700 ferriar, pre-1700 ferryar, pre-1700 feryar, pre-1700 feryiar, 1700s ferrier.

β. Scottish pre-1700 ferrior, pre-1700 ferriour.

Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: ferry v., -er suffix1.
Etymology: < ferry v. + -er suffix1. Compare Old Frisian fērer , fērier , Middle Low German vērer , Old High German feriāri , ferrāri (Middle High German (in late sources) waerger , German †Ferger ; the now usual German word is Fährmann ferryman n.), all in sense ‘ferryman’. Compare also Anglo-Norman fferier ferryman (1421 or earlier). The β. forms show suffix substitution (compare -or suffix). It is unclear whether early attestations in surnames, like the following, should be taken as reflecting earlier currency of the Middle English or the Anglo-Norman word, although it is likely that the Anglo-Norman word also ultimately shows a borrowing from English:1281 in W. Illingworth Rotuli Hundredorum (1818) II. 644 Sibill. le Feryere.1319 in B. Thuresson Middle Eng. Occup. Terms (1950) 85 Joh. le Feryer.1392 in E. J. Courthope & B. E. R.
