单词 ferrite
释义

ferriten.adj.

Brit. /ˈfɛrʌɪt/, U.S. /ˈfɛˌraɪt/
Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin ferrum , -ite suffix1.
Etymology: < classical Latin ferrum iron (see ferro- comb. form) + -ite suffix1.With sense A. 1 compare French ferrite (1851 or earlier) and earlier ferrate n. In sense A. 2b after German Ferrit (H. Vogelsang 1872, in Zeitschr. der Deutsch. Geol. Ges. 24 530); compare French ferrite (1872 in this sense, in another paper by Vogelsang).
A. n.
1. Chemistry and Materials Science. Any of a series of solid compounds with the general formula MFe2O4 (where M is a metal ion in the +2 oxidation state or a stoichiometrically equivalent mixture of such ions); (as a mass noun) material of this kind. Also more widely: any compound that can be regarded as being formed from ferric oxide or hydroxide and a metal oxide or other base. Many ferrites MFe2O4 have magnetic properties and a low electrical conductivity that make them suitable for use in permanent magnets, transformer cores, and other high-frequency electrical components. All have crystal structures related to that of the mineral spinel (MgAl2SiO4).

1865 Geol. Mag. 2 40 If he [sc. J. W. Young] might be allowed to propose a name for it, he would suggest ‘Ferrite’, from the large percentage of iron it contains.
1882 M. F. Heddle in Mineral. Mag. Feb. 30 Ferrite seems therefore to have a doubtful claim to rank as a mineral, or to be, at most, a pseudomorph.

b. Geology. An amorphous material, typically red, brown, or yellow, consisting largely of iron oxide or hydroxide and occurring as particles in the groundmass of rocks. Now rare.

3. Metallurgy. A relatively soft allotropic form of pure iron which has a body-centred cubic crystal structure and is the stable form of iron below 910°C (more fully alpha ferrite) and above approx. 1400°C (more fully delta ferrite). Also: a component of steel consisting of this form of iron containing a small proportion of carbon in solid solution.Alpha and delta ferrite are also called alpha iron and delta iron respectively.Between the above temperatures the stable form of iron is the face-centred cubic allotrope austenite (= gamma iron n. at gamma adj. 2a). Cf. beta n. 2g(a).
