Origin: Formed within English, by compounding; perhaps modelled on a French lexical item, or perhaps modelled on a Latin lexical item. Etymons: ferri- comb. form, -vorous comb. form.
Etymology: < ferri- comb. form + -vorous comb. form, after French ferrivore (1770 in the passage translated in quot. 1792, or earlier) or its etymon scientific Latin ferrivora ( P. Barrere Essai sur l'histoire naturelle de la France équinoxiale (1749) 133).
