Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin ferrum , -oan suffix.
Etymology: < classical Latin ferrum iron (see ferro- comb. form) + -oan suffix. Compare ferrian adj.
Mineralogy.
Of a mineral: having a (small) proportion of a constituent element replaced by ferrous iron (oxidation number +2; cf. ferrous adj. 2). Contrasted with ferrian adj.
