释义

anchoristn.

Forms:

α. 1500s ancoriste, 1500s–1900s anchorist, 1600s ancorist.

β. 1600s–1700s anachorist.

Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly formed within English, by derivation. Apparently partly a borrowing from Latin. Etymons: anchor n.2, -ist suffix; Latin anachorista.
Etymology: Partly (in the α. forms) < anchor n.2 + -ist suffix, after anchorism n., and apparently partly (especially in the β. forms) < post-classical Latin anachorista (13th cent. in a British source, also occasionally in 14th and 15th cent.), anchorista (14th cent. in a British source), rare, probably an alteration of anachoreta , anchorita anchorite n., with suffix substitution (see -ista -ist suffix). Compare earlier anchorite n.
