Origin: Probably of multiple origins. Partly formed within English, by derivation. Probably partly a borrowing from Latin. Etymons: anchorite n., -ic suffix; Latin anachoreticus.
Etymology: Partly (especially in the α. forms) < anchorite n. + -ic suffix, and probably partly (especially in the β. forms) directly < post-classical Latin anachoreticus of or relating to a hermit (5th cent.; from 8th cent. in British sources), anchoreticus, anchoriticus (7th cent. in an Irish source; 15th cent. in British sources) < Hellenistic Greek ἀναχωρητικός disposed to retire, in Byzantine Greek also of or relating to a hermit < Byzantine Greek ἀναχωρητής anchorite n. + -ικός -ic suffix. Compare earlier anchoretical adj., anchoretal adj., and anchorite adj. Compare also slightly earlier anchoritism n.
Of, relating to, characteristic of, or of the nature of an anchorite or anchorites; solitary, reclusive.
