Origin: A borrowing from Arabic. Etymons: Arabic fallāḥ, fellāḥ.
Etymology: < Arabic fallāḥ (also transliterated fellāḥ) peasant, (in extended use) rustic, yokel < falaḥa to till the soil, probably < Aramaic palaḥa to work, labour, to plough (land).Compare Aramaic pallāḥ workman, farmer. Compare French fellah (1661; rare before the late 18th cent.), Italian fellah (a1652). In plural forms in -in, -een after the Arabic plural form fellāḥīn.
In Arabic-speaking countries, esp. Egypt: an agricultural labourer, a peasant. Also figurative.
