Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French ferronnerie.
Etymology: < French ferronnerie, (now rare) ferronerie ironmongery collectively (end of the 13th cent. in Old French as feronerie ; 1878 in décor ferronnerie and 1882 in decor à ferronnerie , denoting decoration consisting of a motif resembling ornamental ironwork) < ferron smith (late 12th cent. in Old French), ironmonger (1671; < fer iron (see chemin de fer n.) + -on -oon suffix) + -erie -ery suffix.Not fully naturalized in English. O.E.D. Suppl. (1976) only records a non-naturalized pronunciation /fɛrɔnri/.
Decoration on pottery, fabric, etc., consisting of a motif of arabesques or scrolls resembling ornamental ironwork. Frequently attributive.
