Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin festina lente.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin festina lente (1508 in Erasmus) < classical Latin festīnā , imperative of festīnāre to hasten (see festinate v.) + lentē slowly (see lente n.), translating Hellenistic Greek σπεῦδε βραδέως (cited as a Greek proverb in Suetonius Augustus 25). O.E.D. Supplement (1972) gives the pronunciation as (fe·stina le·ntė) /ˈfɛstɪnə ˈlɛntɪ/.
Used to warn against over-hasty action: ‘Make haste slowly’. Also occasionally as n.: an approach characterized by efficient but careful progress. Cf. to make haste slowly at haste n. Phrases 2b.
