Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymons: French feme, femme.
Etymology: < Anglo-Norman, Law French, and Middle French feme, fame, femme (French femme femme n.) woman (end of the 10th cent. in Old French), wife (c1100) < classical Latin fēmina woman (see female n.). Compare femme n., a later re-borrowing of the same word. Compare also feme sole n., feme covert n.
1. A woman. Cf. femme n. 1. rare and poetic after 17th cent.Probably after the legal usage (see sense 2), although this is not attested in English until later.
