单词 | feme covert |
释义 | feme covertn. Law. Now historical. A married woman, considered as under the authority and protection of her husband, and (formerly, in English common law and United States law) as having no separate legal identity or rights to her own property; opposed to feme sole. Cf. covert adj. 4, coverture n. 9a.Where substantial means were in issue, the courts of Equity recognized that property might be put outside a husband's reach if it were settled on the wife as her ‘separate property’. In England in the 19th cent. the legal disabilities of married women became increasingly the object of strong and influential criticism, leading to legislation, notably the Married Women's Property Act of 1882, which achieved a substantial measure of reform.
