Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymons: French fumerel, fumeril.
Etymology: < Anglo-Norman fumerel, femorelle, femurel, fomurelle and Old French fumeril, femeril, fumeraille (13th cent.) < post-classical Latin fumariolum vent, chimney pot (late 2nd or early 3rd cent. in Tertullian) < classical Latin fūmārium smoke room where wine was stored to mature ( < fūmus fume n. + -ārium -arium suffix) + -olum -olum suffix. Compare the post-classical Latin forms fumerellum , fumerillum (from 13th cent. in British sources), femerallum , femerellum (from 14th cent. in British sources). Compare Old Occitan fumaral , Italian fumarola chimney (1440; now only in sense ‘volcanic vent’: see fumarole n.).
