Etymology: < (i) French †féminal characteristic of or associated with women, specific to women (a1439 in Middle French), and its etymon (ii) post-classical Latin feminalis of or relating to a woman (6th cent.), feminine, womanly (11th cent. in a British source; compare classical Latin fēminal the female pudendum (2nd cent. a.d. in Apuleius)) < classical Latin fēmina woman (see female n.) + -ālis -al suffix1. Compare earlier feminality n., and also feminine adj., feminile adj.The following shows editorial or compositorial misreading of the manuscript of a1398, which has semynal (seminal adj. 1a).1495 Trevisa's Bartholomeus De Proprietatibus Rerum (de Worde) xvii. cxli. sig. Tiijv/1 Rewe is yeuen ayenst Femynalle [a1398 semynal] fluxe. The following apparently shows a formation in -al suffix1 on classical Latin fēmineus of or belonging to a woman (see femineity n.):1621 J. Martyn New Epigrams sig. D3 Femineall Modestie..Gaue way to loosenes.
