Etymology: < classical Latin fēmina woman (see female n.) + -il suffix, after e.g. virile adj., puerile adj., juvenile adj., etc. Compare Old Occitan feminil , femenil , Italian femminile (a1294). Compare earlier feminine adj.
Obsolete. rare before 19th cent.
= feminine adj. (in various senses).
