Etymology: < Old English Finnas plural, corresponding to Old Norse Finnr, Swedish, Danish, German Finne. In the first and second centuries the name is recorded as Latin Fennī (Tacitus) Greek ϕίννοι (Ptolemy). Presumably of Germanic origin; some have conjectured that it is related by ablaut to fen n.¹

Originally: a member of a people of Scandinavia and north-eastern Europe speaking a Finno-Ugric language; (subsequently) a native or inhabitant of Finland; a person of Finnish descent.Finn and Finland do not correspond to terms used by the Finns themselves (who use Suomi and derivatives). N.E.D. (1896) comments: ‘Often applied more widely to include other peoples closely allied ethnically and linguistically to the Finns proper or Suomi.’
