Origin: A borrowing from German. Etymon: German Anschluss.
Etymology: < German Anschluss addition, annexation, union, connection, contact (1831; 1843 in a political context; earlier in sense ‘appendix’: 1691) < anschließen to lock (a person or thing) to (another) (1593), to join, annex, enclose, connect, link up (1684; < an- on- prefix + schließen : see slot n.1).
Politics (now usually depreciative).
Annexation of a country or region, union of countries or regions; spec. (now historical) the annexation of Austria by Germany (either as actually implemented in 1938 or as proposed before that date). In early use also in weaker sense: close political association.
