Used as combining form of Latin fissus, past participle of findĕre to split, employed in Biology, Physiology, Zoology, in terms indicating the condition of being cleft. ˌfissiˈcostate adj. having the nervures or ribs divided ( New Sydenham Soc. Lexicon). ˌfissiˈdactyl adj. (also ˌfissiˈdactyle) having the digits divided. ˌfissigeˈmmation n. a mode of reproduction intermediate between fission and gemmation. ˌfissiˈlingual adj. having the tongue cleft; said of a suborder of saurian reptiles, hence called Fissilinguia. ˌfissiˈpalmate adj. partially web-footed; semipalmate. ˌfissipalˈmation n. partial palmation, or incomplete webbing of the toes. ˌfissipartuˈrition n. the action of giving birth to young by fission (in quot. transferred). ˌfissiˈrostral adj. having a deeply cleft beak; belonging to the order of birds thence called Fissirostres. ˌfissiˈrostrate adj. = fissirostral adj.
