Origin: Apparently a borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin anser , -ated suffix.
Etymology: Apparently < classical Latin anser goose (see anserine adj.) + -ated suffix; compare quot. 1688. In sense (b) apparently by confusion with ansated adj.
Of a cross: (a) (Heraldry) having the extremities cleft and terminated in the heads of serpents, or (later) of eagles, lions, or other animals; (b) having a handle or handles, or a loop or ring resembling a handle; = ansated adj.
