Origin: Probably formed within English, by derivation; modelled on a French lexical item. Etymons: file v.1, -or suffix.
Etymology: Probably < file v.1 + -or suffix, after Middle French affilloere, affilouere tool for sharpening (1390; French affiloire , rare before the 18th cent.; feminine) < affiler affile v.1 + -oire -ory suffix1.Compare post-classical Latin filarium (first half of the 15th cent. or earlier in a British source; compare quot. 1440), affilatorium (late 15th cent. or earlier in a British source; compare quot. 1483), and also French affiloir (1762; masculine), all in sense ‘tool for sharpening’.
Obsolete.
A tool for sharpening steel; a hone, a whetstone.
