Origin: Formed within English, by compounding; apparently originally modelled on an Italian lexical item. Etymons: ant n.1, bear n.1
Etymology: < ant n.1 + bear n.1, apparently originally after Italian †orso formigaro (compare quot. 1555 at sense 1; now orso formichiere ), itself probably after Spanish oso hormiguero (1526 as osso hormiguero ). With sense 2 compare slightly earlier aardvark n.
1. Chiefly North American. An anteater of the family Myrmecophagidae, esp. the great anteater, Myrmecophaga tridactyla.
