Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Partly a borrowing from Greek. Etymons: Latin acopum; Greek ἄκοπον.
Etymology: < classical Latin acopum and its etymon Hellenistic Greek ἄκοπον salve for relief of pain or weariness, use as noun (short for ϕάρμακον ἄκοπον remedy against fatigue) of neuter of ancient Greek ἄκοπος removing fatigue < ἀ- a- prefix6 + κόπος copos n. Compare French †acope (1549 in Middle French), †acopum (1708).
Medicine and Veterinary Medicine. Obsolete.
A remedy for weariness or pain, typically in the form of a paste or oil; spec. such a remedy used to treat horses.In quot. 1632 figurative.
