Etymology: < finance n.1 + -er suffix1, after Middle French, French financier (see financier n.). Compare finance v., which is first attested later in the relevant senses.
1. In France: a tax farmer (see farmer n.2 1a); an administrator or collector of taxes; = financier n. 1. Obsolete (historical in later use).The system of privatized tax collection involving such tax farmers was abolished during the French Revolution.
