单词 fireship
释义

fireshipn.

Brit. /ˈfʌɪəʃɪp/, U.S. /ˈfaɪ(ə)rˌʃɪp/
Forms: see fire n. and ship n.1
Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: fire n., ship n.1
Etymology: < fire n. + ship n.1 Compare Dutch vuurschip (1585), German Feuerschiff (mid 17th cent), both originally denoting ships carrying burning material to an enemy's ships or installations, but now usually in sense ‘light vessel’. N.E.D. (1896) assigned the following quot. to sense 1, based on a misreading of sixe shippes as fire shippes:1588 R. Parke tr. J. G. de Mendoza Hist. Kingdome of China 170 Captayne of the sixe shippes of Chincheo.
1. A ship loaded with burning material and explosives, which is set adrift near enemy ships or installations to ignite and destroy them. Also figurative. Now historical.
